Portugal
Let's explore one of the world's most fascinating countries β packed with surprises, stories, and pen pal potential.

The Basics
3 Things That Will Blow Your Mind
Genuinely. You'll want to tell someone immediately.
Portugal is the oldest country in Europe with its current borders
Portugal has had essentially the same borders since 1297 β over 725 years. While almost every other European country has been dramatically redrawn, expanded, or collapsed since then, Portugal has stayed the same shape.
A small country of 1 million people once mapped the entire world
In the 1400s and 1500s, Portuguese explorers were the first Europeans to reach India by sea, the first to reach Japan, the first to sail around Africa, and among the first to reach the Americas. From one small country, sailors went everywhere.
The world's oldest bookshop still trading is in Lisbon
Livraria Bertrand opened in 1732 and has been selling books continuously ever since β through a major earthquake that destroyed much of Lisbon, two world wars, and a dictatorship. It holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest operating bookshop on Earth.
Famous For
Waves
NazarΓ© in Portugal holds the world record for the largest wave ever surfed β over 30 metres tall. Portugal's Atlantic coast attracts surfers from around the world.
Fado
Fado is Portugal's deeply emotional folk music, full of longing and feeling. UNESCO recognised it as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage. It's still performed live in Lisbon restaurants every night.
Pastel de Nata
The custard tart invented by monks in a Lisbon monastery in the early 1800s. The original bakery, PastΓ©is de BelΓ©m, opened in 1837 and still uses the same secret recipe.
Age of Exploration
Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Bartolomeu Dias β Portuguese explorers charted the world's oceans and opened sea routes that connected continents for the first time.
Did You Know?
Portugal and England have the oldest active military alliance in the world β the Treaty of Windsor, signed in 1386, is still in force today. That's over 630 years of being officially on the same side.
Pen Pal Connection
A child in Portugal might write to you about a beach holiday on the Atlantic coast, a pastel de nata still warm from the bakery, the sound of fado drifting from a restaurant at night, or the puzzling fact that in Portugal, dinner often doesn't start until 9pm.
